The death of Blu-Ray?
Venturer Electronics has announced a $199 HD-DVD player that is supposed to ship in time for the 2007 holiday season. If that happens, it may spell out the death knell for Blu-Ray as the dominant standard for high definition DVDs. It does not qualify for the 8 free HD-DVD deal that Amazon did or the 5 free discs that you get with the Toshiba (the 8 disc deal would bring the Toshiba player in at about $80 if you count each disk's value at $20).
But when the consumer sees the player at $199, that will make a much larger difference in purchasing the unit as opposed to depending on the average Wal-Mart customer to do the math on the Toshiba deal.
